Infamous: Second Son’s HDR Update Is a Big Deal

Time to revisit Seattle.

Sony’s high-powered PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 4 Pro, capable of outputting games at 4K (albeit some games employing upscaled 4K rather than true 4K) with high dynamic range (or HDR) releases November 11, and Sony’s PlayStation 4 software update 4.0 brought HDR support to existing PlayStation 4 consoles.

As such, many older PlayStation 4 games are receiving HDR updates to take advantage of the new technology. PlayStation 4 exclusive Infamous: Second Son, which released in 2014, is no different, with its new update introducing HDR support that promises to enhance image quality.

According to Reddit user _LarZen_, who uploaded a bunch of images comparing the original game to the new update, the HDR update “brings depth and a real punch to the game.” As you can see in the images, the contrast and the depth of the color is fairly substantially increased.

The push for higher graphical fidelity on existing PlayStation 4 titles coincides with the upcoming PlayStation 4 Pro’s release, with a number of games already promising updates to take advantage of the new console’s hardware, including HDR functionality. Though how exactly games will take advantage of the hardware remains to be seen, with some offering 4K resolutions and others promising increased detail and higher framerates at current resolutions.
