Despite its October unveiling and planned March launch, the Nintendo Switch’s software lineup still remains largely mysterious. One of the most prominently featured games in the hybrid home/portable console’s announcement trailer was The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — but Bethesda and Nintendo have refused to confirm that the RPG is in development for the console.
In a new interview with Glixel, Bethesda Director and Executive Producer Todd Howard still didn’t quite go so far as to confirm Skyrim for Switch, but he did at least reaffirms that his studio will be supporting a Nintendo console for the first time in a (very) long time. Howard first got to play around with the Switch months before its public unveiling when it was still codenamed the Nintendo NX. He came away impressed.
“I love it. I got to play it,” he recounted. “I will tell you – well, maybe that’s an N.D.A. thing. One of the best demos I’ve ever seen. Probably the best demo I’ve ever seen. At E3.”
When asked if it was a Nintendo game that so impressed him, Howard said it was the hardware itself that he was smitten with. He then volunteered the information that Bethesda will be supporting the Switch.
“I mean the device itself. I think it’s really smart what they’re doing,” he said. “We’re definitely going to be supporting it. It’s the first time we’ve done something on Nintendo. If you don’t count the old NES stuff. Home Alone. Or Where’s Waldo?”
Glixel also asked Howard if it was truly possible to put Skyrim, one of the last generation’s biggest open-world games, onto a handheld for gamers to take with them on the go. As it so happens, it is indeed possible — without making any sacrifices.
“It’s the same game on the TV and on the other screen,” explained Howard.
Howard stopped short of saying in no uncertain terms that Skyrim is coming to the Switch. Considering that Bethesda has not announced or even hinted at the 2011 RPG is coming to any other portable device, Howard’s words would seem to be in reference to a Switch port. That may not have seemed surprising immediately after the Switch announcement video featuring Skyrim debuted, but Bethesda refused to confirm plans for a Switch release of its smash hit.
“While we are not confirming any specific titles at this time, we are pleased to announce our partnership with Nintendo and support of the Switch,” a Bethesda spokesperson told GI.biz shortly following the console’s unveiling. “We look forward to revealing specific games and details in the future.”
