Battlefield 1: How to Get All Campaign Codex Entries

Get ready to put some work in.

Battlefield 1 has a huge amount of collectibles for players to find during each of the campaign’s War Stories. On top of Field Manuals, completing certain objectives will grant you codex entries. These unlock certain weapon modifications in multiplayer, on top of giving you a card you can view in your Soldier menu with a bit of historical information.

There’s a total of 53 different codex entries scattered across the game’s six War Stories. Here’s how to unlock each and every one, separated by War Story and then again by missions within each story.

Battlefield 1 Prologue: Storm of Steel

Break of Dawn

African American Soldiers – Complete Break of Dawn.

Unmissable. Awarded for completing the opening segment.

Battlefield 1 War Story #1: Through Mud and Blood

Collectable: Field Manuals

All four missions  in this War Story have a codex entry for finding all Field Manuals. Check here for our guide here, on how to find all of them.

Over the Top

Observation Balloons – Kill 5 enemies while on foot.

During the first chapter, simply exit the tank and kill five enemies with your firearms.

German Anti-Tank Tactics – Destroy all 36 field guns.

There are 36 field guns scattered around this mission, here’s where each of them are

  • Guns 1 and 2 are at Point A, while 3-5 are found at Point B, and you’ll nab 6-10 at Point C.
  • Guns 11-13 will be shooting at you while you take Beren’s Crossing, and they surround Point C.
  • After you take Beren’s Crossing, guns 14-17 will be at the very next German encampment.
  • Guns 18-21 will be at the well square in the encampment.
  • Guns 22-25 are located at the German church HQ
  • Guns 26 and 27 can be found at Point D, along the trenches
  • Gun 28 is inside Big Willy’s Farm
  • After the farm, guns 29-31 are up the hill before you hit the bridge.
  • Guns 32-34 are stationed just before the giant metal bridge that you cross.
  • Guns 35 and 36 are just after the same bridge.

Fog of War

Forest Combat – Get through the forest without any melee kills.

This chapter will require you to play through multiple times for all codex. For this one, you need to take down every enemy without any melee kills, meaning stealth isn’t in the cards. Head in and blast away the enemies at all three checkpoints, and you can even lower the difficulty and still complete this one just fine.

Guiding Bess – Get through the forest undetected.

Like Forest Combat, you can lower the difficulty here, but essentially you’ll need to kill every enemy with a stealthy melee attack. Take it slow and make sure you’re spotting enemies and noting their patrol patterns. If you get caught, you can just load back to the nearest checkpoint and you’ll be fine.

Breakdown

Tank Hunters– Retrieve the first engine component in Breakdown.

This is required for the story. Cannot miss.

Stealing Tanks – Retrieve all engine components undetected.

This one might sound daunting, but it actually isn’t that bad. When you start this mission head into the nearest windmill to you, and you’ll find a silenced scoped bolt-action rifle. You can use the hills and roofs of buildings to spot enemies and take them out with the rifle if you want. You can also sneak through the building of the villages relatively easy, taking enemies out with melee kills or just leaving them be. Of course, just take your time and you’ll come out fine.

Steel on Steel

Bourion Wood – Don’t let the tank get damaged before clearing the village.

This one can honestly be tough. First thing’s first, lower the difficulty to make this as easy as possible. As you progress make sure to use windmills and hills as covers, and height to your advantage. Taking fire from enemies on foot does not count as taking damage, but taking a shell from another tank or anti-tank gun does. Like before, you can reload the last checkpoint if you take a hit.

Beutepanzers – Destroy one of the captured Mark V tanks.

The Mark V tank is basically the tank that you’ve been driving this whole time. You can find one in the village at the start of this mission, on the left of the defensive line and behind a windmill.

Towards Cambrai – Complete Through Mud and Blood.

Unmissable after completing Through Mud and Blood.

Battlefield 1 War Story #2: Friends in High Places

Collectible: Field Manuals

The final two missions in this story, Fall From Grace and Forte et fidele, each have codex entries for collecting all Field Manuals. Check out our guide here for all of the Field Manual locations.

Test Flight

To Be Ace – Finish the target practice in Test Flight.

Unmissable with the story.

Dicta Boelcke – Don’t lose the chase trail.

During the training sequence, there’ll be a segment where you need to follow another plane. Simply stick behind him and keep the chase meter up. If you fail, simply reload the checkpoint and try again.

Total War

Strategic Bombing – Destroy the fort in Total War.

Unmissable with the story.

Bloody April 1917 – Have at least four bombers survive a bombing run in Total War.

Like other codex entries, this one is easier if you lower the difficulty. During the section where you’re escorting the bombers, you’ll need to keep at least four of the five survive,. Just focus on taking down enemy fighters when they appear, and then destroying the AA guns in the village.

Fall From Grace

No Man’s Land – Reach No Man’s Land undetected.

This one shouldn’t be too bad, as long as you go slow and watch for enemies. Only kill enemies with melee kills, and just make sure their alert meter doesn’t turn into the red. If it starts to fill, hide and wait for it to go back down.

Booby Traps – Use tripwire bombs to kill 2 enemies in Fall From Grace.

If you follow the road from the start of this mission, you’ll find a weapon box with tripwire bombs. Simply place the bombs near anywhere that you see enemies, alert them, and then lure them into the bomb. You may need to play the mission twice to complete both codex entries.

Forte et Fidele

Gotha Raids on London – Take down the bombers in Forte et fidele.

Unmissable with the story

Airborne Cannons – Destroy 10 aircraft within 30 seconds using the stationary weapon in Forte et fidele.

This one is probably the trickiest of this war story. Once you land on the blimp and take over the AA gun, you’ll need to shoot down ten enemy planes in 30 seconds. You might need to practice a few times to nail this codex. The aircraft appear in this order; straight ahead, upper right, middle right, then the same spot again.

Dawn of Dogfights – Complete Friends in High Places

Unmissable after completing the War Story.

Battlefield 1 War Story #3: Avanti Savaoia!

Collectible: Field Manuals

Both of the missions in this War Story has a codex entry for collecting all Field Manuals. Check out our guide here for their locations.

O La Vittoria

Farina Armor – Kill 5 enemies with grenades in O La Vittoria.

Pretty simple, you just need to kill five enemies with grenades in this mission. Hold onto all of your grenades until you come to the church, which has a ton of enemies. You have 8 grenades total, for the 5 kills.

The Daring Ones – Join the fight as an Arditi Elite Troop in O La Vittoria.

Unmissable with the story.

O Tutti Accoppati

Where Eagles Dare – Defeat 10 enemies with your sidearm in O Tutti Accoppati.

This one is also simple, just switch to your sidearm and use it to kill ten enemies.

Beyond Belief – Witness the explosion of the mountain side in O Tutti Accoppati.

Unmissable with the story.

Battlefield 1 War Story #4: The Runner

Collectible: Field Manuals

All three missions in this War Story have a codex entry for collecting all Field Manuals. Check out our guide here for their locations.

Cape Helles

The Big Guns – Call in an offshore barrage in Cape Helles.

Unmissable with the story.

Torpedo Exploit – Get 10 headshot kills in Cape Helles.

Exactly as it sounds, use any gun and land 10 headshot kills on enemies.

The Runner

Drip Gun – Defeat 10 enemies with a sidearm in The Runner.

There’s a few different sidearms you can pick up in this chapter, but the first can be found in a house on the far left of your starting position. You can also turn around from your starting position and go to the backside of the house to find a silenced pistol in a crate. This pistol only has 10 shots however, so you’ll need to be deadly accurate.

Geology – Defeat 5 enemies with Rifle Grenades in The Runner.

Rifle grenades can be found in two locations in the mission, and you’ll get three shots with each. The first is directly inside the first building with the first objective, and the second is to the right of your starting position, next to the house with a Field Manual.

Be Safe

River Clyde – Defeat 5 enemies with grenades in Be Safe.

This one’s a bit weird, as you can only use your first three grenades for the codex. This means as least one of your grenades will need to kill multiple enemies. Changing the difficulty down will make this challenge easier. Just watch for groups of enemies to chuck a grenade at.

Sedd El Bahr – Defeat 10 enemies with melee attacks in Be Safe.

This one is self explanatory, just kill 10 enemies with melee attacks. You can switch the game to easy if you want.

The Dardanelles – Complete The Runner.

Unmissable after completing The Runner.

Battlefield 1 War Story #5: Nothing Is Written

Collectible: Field Manuals

All three mission in this War Story, have a codex entry for collecting all Field Manuals. Check out our guide here, for the locations of the manuals.

Hidden in Plain Sight

The Hejaz Railway – Scout the crash site in Hidden in Plain Sight.

Right at the very start of the mission pull out your binoculars and look around the entire crash site.

The Bedouin – Find the book without being detected in Hidden in Plain Sight.

The easiest way to do this one, is to find the silence pistol at the start of the mission. Head left from your starting area until you reach a weapon tent, and you’ll find the M1911 Silencer. At this point you could stealthily kill all enemies if you really want, although it could be tough. Alternatively, you can try and sneak around to the left of the train, climb up and kill the enemy on top of the train, and then drop down the hatch to the book.

Young Men’s Work

Gertrude Bell – Kill one of the officers by using a bolt-action rifle in Young Men’s Work.

This chapter has three enemy officers that you’ll need to kill in three different areas. You can find a bolt-action rifle in a weapon tent near the desert outpost. Just grab it, and kill one of the officers.

T.E. Lawrence – Kill one of the officers with a melee attack in Young Men’s Work.

This one is obvious, just use a melee attack either in stealth or not, to kill an enemy officer.

Tanks in the Desert – Kill one of the officers by using a tank in Young Men’s Work.

If you look in the ancient ruing, you’ll spot two small tanks. Hop in one and roll into one of the enemy encampments. As long as you aren’t shooting, enemies won’t shoot at you. Just track down an officer and take him out in the tank.

Hear the Desert

Desert Cars – Destroy the three vehicles while undetected in Heart the Desert.

As soon as you start this mission head to the tent in front of you and grab the dynamite. You’ll need to be careful here, as you have to apply the dynamite to all three cars. Make sure you don’t press the button before you’ve applied the dynamite to all three. Spot as many enemies as you can before you start, and then try to quickly pass by all of them and load the cars. The longer you take the more likely you are to be found out.

Planes Above the Sand – Keep at least 2 field guns operational in Hear the Desert.

The village where you ambush the War Train has six field guns scattered around. To keep two operational, simply don’t use them. Generally the train’s fire won’t hit them unless you’ve been using the guns. You can find rocket guns and tank grenades dotted around the map, so use those instead.

Arab Revolt – Complete Nothing Is Written

Unmissable after completing Nothing is Written.

There’s the lengthy list of codex entries to complete in Battlefield 1, which will undoubtedly take a while. Make sure to check back with Twinfinite for more guides, tips, and tricks on Battlefield 1.
