Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most anticipated games on the horizon (no pun intended) and could well be another reason for gamers to purchase a PlayStation 4 given its exclusivity. From what we’ve seen so far, the game looks incredible, but it’s not without sacrifice.
Whilst speaking to Game Informer, Horizon Zero Dawn’s director Mathijs de Jonge revealed that work was scrapped on a second game in order to focus all efforts on Horizon.
“We started out with a smaller team to look into exploring what those concepts would mean if we were to develop them,” said de Jonge. “At some point we took two forward, worked on those prototypes for like, half a year or so. And we did some testing with some external people from Sony that are not in our office, and internally as well, and it was kind of 50/50 at some points.”
He added: “We actually put all the feedback that we got into an Excel sheet. And we had these two graphs: What excites you most and what do you think is the most risky one? The project that [stood] out on both charts was Horizon.”
de Jonge went on to explain that Horizon seemed risky because Guerrilla has never worked on an RPG game before and the studio didn’t even have an engine to support it. With that in mind, all work was focused on the title.
“This is an action RPG. Open world. We didn’t have any tools, we didn’t have an engine that supported open world. At the same time it was such an exciting concept, so we cancelled all work on the second project and continued just on Horizon.”
Exactly what this second game was is anyone’s guess, but some speculate it may have been a new entry in the Killzone franchise. Whatever the case, it’s dead now.
Horizon Zero Dawn is set to be released on the PlayStation 4 on March3, 2017.
