Players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 could theoretically be playing against and alongside each other via cross-network functionality on Rocket League by the end of the day, if Sony ever agreed to allow the feature, says Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham.
Speaking to IGN, Dunham said that the studio had completed work on their popular car football game’s cross-play support, and the only thing preventing its release is “the go-ahead on the Sony side.”
“We can, in less than a business day, turn it on and have it up and working no problem” said Dunham, “It’d literally take a few hours to propagate throughout the whole world, so really we’re just waiting on the permission to do so.”
Microsoft has already expressed its support for cross-network functionality, though Sony has yet to give an official response.
Dunham suggested that because “Sony’s such a big company […] I’m sure it takes a while for them to figure out what it is that the roadblocks are, what sort of issues they might run into with other titles, any number of things that I can’t even begin to speculate on.”
Even so, Psyonix have apparently made the effort to “ask them for updates often, and we’re still very confident that they’re eventually going to open those doors and welcome us in.”
