The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine once again takes Geralt and places him into the center of choices being made around him. Like in most cases though, he has a bit of influence in the direction that fate may take. This remains true in the ending of Blood and Wine.

While playing through the expansion, a story unfolds between two sisters. On one hand you have Anna Henrietta, the duchess of Toussaint who is the reason for your presence in her country. On the other, you have Syanna, who was cast out and exiled when she was a child due to her unruly behavior and “cursed” birth. As the story goes on, both are drawn front and center during a plot involving theft, subterfuge, and assassination.

Yet, when it comes time for each of their fates to be drawn, Geralt may shatter that plan built up on years of hatred and allow for a happy ending. Alternatively, he can let things run their course and witness a heart-wrenching tragedy.

This guide will show you how to get each ending. However the ultimate decision is up to you.

The Happy/Good Ending

The happy ending is obtained by making specific choices during the quest “Pomp and Strange Circumstance.” This quest takes place after Detlaff is defeated, removing the threat of his retribution from play. The Duchess sets up a ceremony to both award you for your efforts and to hold Syanna’s trial for her transgressions.

When this quest starts, you begin to wonder who the fifth plan victim was, as only four had been murdered. A bunch of optional objectives are made available and you’ll want to start with speaking to the bootblack (the shoeshiner who gave information about Detlaff before). This will eventually lead you on the hunt for the person with the final name, a beggar who is often seen at a specific shelter. Go and defend the shelter, and you’ll earn the information you seek. Turns out the final target was the duchess herself. This is where your other optional objectives come in.

You can either go straight to the ceremony or go talk to Syanna first. Head to where Syanna is locked up, and convince the guard to let you chat with her for a moment. Geralt will confront her about her plot and a conversation will take place. You’ll want to choose these dialogue options:

  • “Cause she turned her back on you, forgot about you.”
  • “Might ask her that.”
  • “Ever thought to forgive her?”

Once that’s done, head to the ceremony and accept your reward. You’ll have another choice to make here. You can either keep it moving or tell Anna what her sister had planned. Choose the option “Got bad news – Syanna was out to kill you,” then wait for the trial.

You’re almost there. The trial will commence and Anna will ask for your opinion. Choose:

  • “Synna’s clearly guilty.”

Don’t worry, this won’t start a riot. Instead it will lead Syanna to plead her case, opening you up for one more important option. When you get the prompt to choose: ”

  • You were children then, both,”

That’s all you have to do to trigger the good ending .Both sisters will embrace, Syanna will receive her punishment, and then they’ll be able to live happily and lovingly from there.

The Sad/Bad Ending

The bad ending is much easier to get, as evil requires little motivation for its machinations. There are many things you can do to bring this Blood and Wine ending about, but the easiest way is to do nothing. Simply go to the ceremony without finding out who the last target is, or try to persuade Syanna to choose love over enmity.

When the trial begins, Syanna will kill Anna once she gets close. Her own death follows shortly after as Damien tries to save the duchess, but he is much too late. Both sisters, entangled in a tale that had begun when they were mere children face a bitter end. It’s sad, but fairy tales don’t always have happy endings.
