Reports have been circulating for some time that Nintendo may be ready to move on from the Wii U in the near future, but that future may be closer than many people suspected.
According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei (via Polygon and Dr. Serkan Toto), Nintendo will be halting the Wii U’s production sometime in 2016. Nikkei also speculates that Nintendo’s next hardware release the NX will be announced before the end of the year, but those reports are not confirmed at this time.
The Wii U has been out for around four years now and has struggled to match the sales of the Nintendo Wii and that of its rival systems. The latest estimates regarding the system’s sales figures suggest that the Wii U has sold just over 10 million units in comparison to over 35 million PS4s sold and around 15 million Xbox One sales.
At this time, Nintendo has not made an official statement regarding the alleged stoppage of Wii U production, or what it would mean for some of the high profile games that were to be released on the system in 2016. While there is nothing to suggest that Star Fox: Zero and Paper Mario: Color Splash will not still debut on the Wii U as planned, there is still some doubt surrounding the Wii U’s Zelda release as this news, coupled with previous reports of delays, has begun speculation that the game could appear exclusively on the Nintendo NX.
We will be providing further updates when Nintendo makes further comments regarding the future of the Wii U.
