Naughty Dog Wants Uncharted 4 to Tell a More Personal Story

Where Uncharted started, and where it is now.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, while hit by a recent (and small) delay, is pretty close to launch now. In commemoration of the upcoming release, and in similar fashion that was done with The Last of Us, Naughty Dog has chosen to do another behind-the-scenes ‘Making of’ documentary for the game. The first video, aptly named The Evolution of a Franchise, explores way back to the beginning of the first game, and how this history has influenced the personal element of Uncharted 4.

“After making the last of us, I think that influenced a lot and making a more personal story with Uncharted,” shares lead designer Emilia Schatz. “We love uncharted. this is still the uncharted that you’ve always loved, it’s just there’s more layers to it now.”

Neil Druckmann continues the sentiment, saying the team is hoping to take all the lessons of their previous games to tell a more human story in Drake’s fourth and possibly last adventure.

“Uncharted 4 perhaps as a result is going to be the best balance of bombastic and over-the-top and exciting adventure and these smaller moments, these small intimate moments that end up meaning just as much. That end up sticking with us just as long,” said Teagan Morrison, technical art director.

Naughty Dog began Uncharted after the end of Jak and Daxter, looking to create a third-person shooter starring a protagonist who players could relate to. The sequel took that goal a step further by exploring Drake’s flaws, and his more vulnerable side, complimented by the huge set pieces and their challenges. The third installment, meanwhile, combined all of this into one grand experience with everything focused on being bigger and better.

Time has passed, and with it, another game by Naughty Dog: The Last of Us. Many lessons were learned from making that game, as you’ll see in the video; things like character interaction, exploring environments, etc. What it ultimately leads to is Naughty Dog’s goal to make Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End the best Uncharted it could possibly be, taking lessons and inspiration from every game they’ve worked on since UC1 and onwards.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End releases worldwide on May 10 for PlayStation 4. For more details about the video series, check out the post on the PlayStation Blog.
