Sega revealed today, in an interview with GamesBeat, that they will be laying off employees at their western mobile division, Sega Networks Inc. A major portion of the layoffs will be happening at Three Rings Design.
According to Sega, they attribute the layoffs to them having a new focus on IP-based games and their plans to bring “popular Japanese mobile games to the West.”
GamesBeat noted that while they weren’t told how many employees will be let go, they did say: “In response to challenging and hyper-competitive mobile market conditions, Sega Networks Inc., Sega’s mobile division in the West, has refocused its operations and made a reduction in workforce. As a result, we said goodbye to our talented friends and colleagues at Three Rings Design Inc. alongside a small number of team members on the publishing side of Sega’s mobile division.”
In the past, Three Rings Design developed the desktop games Puzzle Pirates and Spiral Knights as well as the Android titles Spellwood, Corpse Craft, and The Everything Game which was later ported to Facebook. This news comes after Sega asked their fans for advice on how to make games in a recent survey.
