PlayStation VR Will Be “Affordable” and “for the Mass Market,” Says Sony

But it also won't be as high-end as competitors.

Sony is still tight-lipped on the actual price for PlayStation VR, but does want the platform to be affordable and accessible for consumers.

PlayStation executive vice president Masayasu Ito has been overseeing the project since 2014, and admits that PSVR will target a different audience than its competitors. Speaking to Polygon, Ito said, “If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR. However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4.”

While the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive run at 2160×1200 resolution with a 90 Hz refresh rate and larger fields of view, PSVR will sport a 1920×1080 resolution and a higher 120 Hz refresh rate. PSVR won’t be top-of-the-line virtual reality technology, but it also will require a PlayStation 4 rather than a much more expensive high-end PC.

“It’s more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable,” Ito continued. “This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It’s for the mass market.”

Shuhei Yoshida meanwhile reiterated that PlayStation VR “will be priced as a new gaming platform,” and said he was surprised to see Oculus Rift priced at $599, expecting a lower number himself. The Rift ships to consumers this month, with the HTC Vive priced at $799 and launching in April.
