After the announcement of a Tomb Raider movie based on the 2013 video game reboot, there has been much debate about which actresses would be a good choice to fulfill the iconic role of Lara Croft. There are plenty of talented actresses who could pull it off, but a select few seem like they would be great fits, at least on paper. Keep in mind, this list is based on actresses who would be a good fit, not a prediction on who will be cast.

Let’s start with an easy one first, a person who has already portrayed Lara Croft. Camilla Luddington did the voice, and was motion captured as Lara in both the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot and again in Rise of the Tomb Raider. She has shown her love for the character, and has the acting ability to take on the role yet again. Plus, fans of the game would love to see the in-game Lara Croft become real.

Felicity Jones

Felicity Jones

Felicity Jones would make a great Lara Croft for a few reasons. She is a UK actress, so her accent will be natural and authentic. She is staring in Star Wars: Rouge One that comes out later this year, so she will have experience working in a huge franchise. If you have doubts on whether or not she would be a great fit, remember her performance in the Theory of Everything (2014) where she showcased her acting chops along with her ability to play a mixture of strength and vulnerability. This new movie portrayal of Lara Croft should showcase that Lara is a layered character that is strong, yet complex. It should also be noted that Jones is the only actress on this list to have an Oscar nomination.

Lauren Cohan

Lauren Cohan is perhaps most famous for her portrayal as Maggie on the Walking Dead. Even though she has a southern accent on the Walking Dead, she has actually lived a large portion of her life in the UK and attended university there. She has experience taking on a role for a screen adaptation of a beloved franchise and she is well versed in the “geek” community. She also had a brief stint on the CW show Supernatural, where she portrayed Bela Talbot, a damaged and complex, British thief who procured supernatural items and relics. Sound familiar? Her performance as Talbot was proof enough that she can take on the role of Lara Croft.

Hayley Atwell

Hayley Atwell is most well known for her portrayal as Peggy Carter in the ABC drama, Agent Carter. This is another actress that has experience playing a character with a huge built-in fan base. She also has worked in big franchise movies such as Captain America: The First Avenger. She has the right look and the UK background to pull it off. She has shown that she can play a strong female lead that is not only smart and resourceful, but also tough when she needs to be.

Daisy Ridley

Daisy Ridley is another obvious choice as she is already being considered for the role. Like many of the other actresses on this list, she is used to working with a big franchise. She already charmed her way into so many of our hearts as her amazing portrayal as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the role she really got to show that she knows how to lead a movie and take on the role of a strong female heroine. She is the first choice for many, and many are hoping that the casting director follows through.
