Nostalgia is a powerful thing. The simplest of things can bring back sounds, smells, and even emotions from your childhood for no apparent reason at all. Understandably so, many cling to nostalgia. They attempt to bottle it up, and take a whiff every now and then to remind them of a time when life was simple. Bills, responsibility, and work were a looming cloud on a distant future. As a gamer in the ’90s, your biggest problem was deciding between a PlayStation, N64, or a Saturn.
As you look back on your gaming history, the silliest of things bring you to a smile. The “in your face” attitude of gaming publications, the scratch and sniff sticker sets, and salacious advertising are all relics of the past covered in a thin layer of weird and grime from the ’90s, but hell, that was yours! All of it. And you wouldn’t trade it for the world. You’re proud of being a ’90s kid! But what else can trigger this precious little response in our brains? Here’s something that’ll send you down memory lane:
YOU SEE THIS AND INSTANTLY PLAY THE RIGHT MUSIC IN YOUR HEAD
WHEN YOU SAW THIS AND KNEW YOU WERE ABOUT TO PLAY A MASTERPIECE
WHEN YOU WALKED AS A GOD AMONGST MORTALS ON THE PLAYGROUND
YOU HOVERED OVER THE MAILBOX WAITING FOR THIS EVERY MONTH
WHEN YOU MADE FRIENDS WITH A KID WITH THIS JUST FOR A CHANCE TO GET AT THEIR GROWLITHE
YOU DID THIS WITH YOUR GAMEBOY IN THE CAR
YOU TURNED YOUR GAMEBOY INTO AN ABOMINATION
WHEN WIRES WERE STILL A THING
WHEN YOU HAD A FRIEND WHOS UNCLE WORKED FOR NINTENDO
WHEN YOU SHELLED OUT BIG MONEY FOR ONE OF THESE
WHEN RENTING A GAME MEANT COMING HERE
YOUR SCHOOL RAN OUT OF INK BECAUSE YOU DECIDED TO PRINT OUT A FINAL FANTASY WALKTHROUGH
YOU DEVOURED GAMES NO MATEER HOW BAD THEY WERE
YOU SPENT LUNCH TIME CONTEMPLATING THE EXISTENCE OF THIS GUY WITH YOUR FRIENDS
YOU SPEND MORE TIME READING ABOUT CLASSIC GAMING THAN ACTUALLY PLAYING GAMES
The nineties were a formative period for you and the video game industry. The 8-bit and 16-bit eras were long gone, and the future was in 32 and 64-bits. But if modern gaming is any indicator, the past will never go out of style.
