2013's Tomb Raider Reboot Is the Best Selling Tomb Raider of All Time

Lara Croft reaches new heights.

The critically acclaimed 2013 reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise has become the best selling Tomb Raider game of all time. The game, developed by Crystal Dynamics, has sold over 8.5 million copies world wide and the Square Enix owned studio has announced that this makes it the best selling Tomb Raider game ever.

Despite also beating all previous Tomb Raider games when it came to first day sales and first month sales, Tomb Raider’s first month sales of 3.6 million actually failed to meet Square Enix’s expectations. The game was originally released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in March 2013 and was later re-released as a definitive edition on the PS4 and Xbox One in January 2014.

The 8.5 million sales figure includes both the standard and definitive edition versions of the game. Crystal Dynamics Studio Head, Darrell Gallagher, said to GameSpot:

Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players.”

The sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider is due to be released later this year on the Xbox One and Xbox 360. This is part of a timed exclusivity deal between Square Enix and Microsoft and the game will come to the PlayStation at a later date.
