Halo 6 Might Not Be Coming Until at Least 2019

343 seems to be hinting it's not coming this year.

Halo 6 Master Chief

October 2017 marked two years since the release of Halo 5, and with no Halo 6 trailer yet emerging and Microsoft barely mentioning the game, fans of Xbox’s flagship game franchise are starting to wonder just how much longer they’ll have to wait for the inevitable sequel. To that end, a barely subtle comment recently posted to the Halo blog seems to indicate the game is at least another calendar year away.

“2018 has arrived and with it, the promise of new fun times to be had and adventures to be embarked upon,” 343 Writer Jeff Easterling wrote on the blog. “No, not those adventures [emphasis Easterling’s], but plenty of exciting ones regardless — some which might surprise you more than others.”

Which adventures are “those” adventures is a question open to some debate, but Easterling would appear to have referenced Halo 6, the adventure on the forefront of most Halo fans’ minds. If so, that would mean the game isn’t coming until 2019, which would be the longest wait ever between main Halo games.

This could be a sign that Microsoft and 343 are taking to heart criticism of Halo 5: Guardians, which has harsher than that of any other main series entrant. Halo 5 was the franchise’s worst-reviewed title, averaging an 84 on Metacritic, which continued the trend of the series’ post-Bungie decline after 343’s first go at the helm, 2012’s Halo 4, having previously been the worst-reviewed Halo game with a Metacritic score of 87.

Still, 343 and Microsoft didn’t give up on Halo 5, which got a major content update in November. If the exciting 2018 items Easterling referred to aren’t tied to Halo 6 in any way, they could involve more content for Halo 5 or for spinoff Halo Wars 2. The much-rumored Halo 3 remake could also now be in the works, though 343 said as recently as last year that this was not the case.

Microsoft did confirm last year that 343 was working “to bring future Halo experiences into mixed reality.” Whether the console holder was talking about Halo 6 and/or something else in the Halo universe isn’t known.

Finally, there’s also the matter of the Halo TV series, which was first announced all the way back in 2013 but has had scant few details revealed since.
