Microsoft Is Ending Support for Groove Music in Favor of Spotify Partnership

Gone nearly as Zune as it started.

Microsoft recently partnered with Spotify to bolster its music-streaming offerings, and as a result support for Microsoft’s Groove Music will be going away at the end of the year. If it was something you used a lot, you’ll need to make sure you have a Spotify account to utilize as Microsoft is working with Spotify to allow users to move over playlists, collections and more to the service to ease the transition,

Groove Music will lose all functionality when Dec. 31 rolls around, so after that date you’ll no longer be able to stream, purchase, or download additional music. Microsoft is working right now to make things simpler for previous Groove Music users and these augments will be available to players to utilize until the end of January.

Groove Music users were previously able to subscribe to the service for $10 a month or $100 a year. It was previously known as Xbox Music before the name change, and has been a mainstay for quite some time. If you have a subscription that goes beyond Dec. 31, you’ll get a refund prorated for the time you’ll be missing if your credit card is on file. Otherwise, you’ll get a 120%  prorated refund by way of a gift card from Microsoft.
