Returning to World War II was a way for Call of Duty to return to its roots, and Sledgehammer is trying to hit a respectful tone for the title’s story. The story of WWII weaves in and out of real-life events, with a focus on brotherhood. Developers from Sledgehammer featured in the reveal talked about how a big theme of the title became the person next to you, not just focusing on the singular solider.

The development team went to great pains and traveled around the world to real-life locations like Normandy and the Rhine, to accurately represent the battles of WWII. Everything from the lighting to the color palette used in-game is all in the effort to make the player feel something. The vision for the art direction of Call of Duty WWII was said to be “Dark and beautiful,” meaning emotionally dark and visually beautiful.

Call of Duty WWII is scheduled to release on Nov. 3, 2017 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Make sure you take a look at the reveal trailer for the game while you’re at it.
