Pokemon Sun and Moon: How to Get Shiny Pokemon

The breeding begins.

Pokemon Sun and Moon – Getting Shiny Pokemon

Recommended Videos

As expected, the Shiny variants are back in Pokemon Sun and Moon, and they’re just as tough to obtain as they were in previous games. First off, Shiny Pokemon are basically just variants of a specific type of Pokemon that have a different coloration. The chances of obtaining a Shiny are incredibly rare, but here are a few methods to help you nab one:

Encountering them in the wild: Again, the chances of encountering a Shiny in the tall grass are very slim, but it can happen. When you see one, make sure you do everything in your power to catch it.

Breed them: To speed up the process of catching a Shiny, you can breed your own Pokemon instead. Sun and Moon feature a daycare system that is available once you reach the second island in the game. Select the Pokemon you want a Shiny variant for, and make sure it’s a female. Pair her up with a Pokemon she can breed with (Ditto can breed with any Pokemon, by the way), and collect Pokemon eggs from the daycare. Carry these eggs with you and hatch them for a chance at a Shiny.

Restarting the game: You can get a Shiny variant for your starter Pokemon as well. Right before you’re asked to choose your starter, save your game, and then make your selection. Reload your save until you obtain a Shiny.
