Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse Has Unlocalized Japanese Text in It, Atlus Apologizes

Not a very big deal.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse will be released in North America later today, but it looks like the final boss fight contains some unlocalized Japanese dialogue. A screenshot of said dialogue has been floating around the web, and this was eventually brought to Atlus’ attention. Atlus declined to post the screenshot on their site as it was considered rather spoiler-y for players who have yet to experience the game, so we’ll extend the same courtesy to you, dear reader, as well. That said, Atlus did address the issue of the unlocalized text.

‘We never realized that there was a specific set of circumstances for the text to appear in-game, and so it never got localized. And unfortunately, it will still be in there by the time the game hits shelves tomorrow. BUT! As our QA testers and reviewers in the media have shown, it’s a relatively rare set of circumstances that will lead players to encounter the aberrant text, and hopefully won’t even be discovered by the vast majority of players.’

Atlus was very upfront about the situation, and stated that it wasn’t clear if they would be able to fix this issue for the English build. However, this incident has pushed them to pore over their text files for Persona 5 and make sure that everything in that game will be translated and localized appropriately.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS on September 20.
