Infinity Ward has released the reveal trailer for its latest entry in the Call of Duty franchise, Infinite Warfare, and its not quite nailed it for a lot of the most seasoned fans.
The trailer shows off the classic first-person shooting action of the series, throwing it far into the future where large-scale war is dominated by mechs, exo-suits, and crazy space battles. While it’s not clear from the trailer just how much of the game will be dominated by this futuristic action, the fact that the series has continued to move further forward into the future seems to be the divisive point among fans.
While some feel this may be a means for the series to stay fresh, the majority of comments on the reveal trailer, which is now disliked over 1.2 million times, seem to suggest that Activision and Infinity Ward haven’t heeded fan complaints. It seems recent entries into the series that focus on the likes of exo-suits and far-future warfare stand opposite of what a lot of Call of Duty fans are after. In fact, one of the saving graces of Infinite Warfare’s reveal was the fact that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered was finally happening. Perhaps a sign that Infinity Ward needs to go back to its roots to rebuild the relationship with fans.
While the reception to the reveal trailer may not have been great, first impressions don’t always give a true representation of the full picture. If any series could turn doubters into believers, it’s the Call of Duty franchise. You only need to look into Call of Duty’s past to see a very similar occurrence with Black Ops II, which took the franchise into the future for the first time. Its reveal trailer picked up the most dislikes of any reveal trailer Activision had ever made to date. Yet, despite this incredibly negative reception, the game went on to become one of the most successful in the Call of Duty franchise.
So what would you have preferred Infinity Ward and Activision to do with Infinite Warfare? Would you like to see them to go back to the modern era? Or do you think that this latest delve into the future is a good thing for the Call of Duty series? How heavily do you think these fights in space and giant mech suits will play a part in Infinite Warfare? Do you think this is a necessary step for the Call of Duty franchise to take to keep it fresh? Will you be getting the game? And are you more excited for Modern Warfare Remastered than Infinite Warfare? Is this too many questions? Let us know in the comments below and get involved in the discussion!
