Overwatch: 5 Game Modes That Could Be Next

We never want our watch to end.

Overwatch, all heroes

With Blizzard’s release of Overwatch, gamers around the world have already taken part in millions of matches. Overwatch has only been out for a few short weeks, but already we would love to see some cool new mode added to the game. Escort, Assault, Control, and Assault/Escort are all a blast to play, but we would be heartbroken if these four modes quickly grew stale. Here are five game modes Overwatch could end up adding.

5) A variation on Kill Confirmed

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 introduced a game mode titled “Kill Confirmed.” In it, players would have to obtain the dog tags of the fallen enemy they previously killed. Only then would the kill be “confirmed,” and would they earn points toward the overall team total. It encouraged players to implement exciting and mart strategies, and was a nice change of pace from the usual Team Deathmatch affairs.

Overwatch is all about teamwork, and this same team work could definitely work in a variation on Kill Confirmed. Maybe you have to protect a specific player who can only be killed for points. Maybe the implementation of “dog tags,” or other character specific tokens are harder to get due to the various character abilities. Given how mature Kill Confirmed was in Modern Warfare 3, it seems unlikely that we’ll get such a mode, but it would be a very interesting mode to see.

4) Capture the Flag

Escort is very similar to Capture the Flag, as one team is tasked to take command of an objective and lead it to the final point in order to win the match. However, in Escort, as well as Escort/Assault, each team has their own specific turn in securing the objective to a pre-specified control point.

Capture the Flag could take advantage of the different roles each player fulfills, as well as possibly lead to some difficult decisions. Do you leave your tank to guard the flag, or do they head out to protect your players on the attack? Can you cleverly control your medic so he or she can properly heal teammates without much difficulty? How much firepower should you leave behind to protect your flag? It’s scenarios like these that pose the possibility for exciting, strategic gameplay sessions.

3) Mirror

Character abilities are important in Overwatch, as each combatant has his or her own unique power. No two powers are alike, and it’s important to properly use them, but what happens when you face a team of the exact same heroes? Given the prevalence of social media, message boards, and online forums, there’s a good chance players have traded many tales about how to counteract character X with character Y.

A mode where each team serves as a “mirror” for one another would put this team work to a test. Randomly assigning the heroes, players would come up against the same team of Overwatch heroes to determine who has a better mastery of their favorite character. Bastion v. Bastion, Hanzo v. Hanzo, Mei v. Mei, are just a few match ups that could serve as exciting tests of skill. On top of that, players would probably learn different ways to play with some of their favorite characters.

2) Ability Mayhem

Recently, Overwatch held a gameplay event where players had 200% health and character abilities recharged in half the time. It’d be great to to recreate this madness each and every time you go to play the game. The special abilities are so varied that it’s almost a no-brainer.

200% health also means each player now last twice as long, meaning you have to be on the offensive twice as often in order to eliminate the enemy. The excitement of jumping back into the arena with the likes of Pharah’s Barrage or Roadhog’s Whole Hog allows you to feel as if you’re an overpowered superhero. And who doesn’t want to feel like an overpowered goof in Overwatch?

1) Tournament/Season Play

Teamwork can always be perfected. No doubt there are already quite a few Overwatch “squads,” who will meet up every night to prove why they are the best. If it remains insanely popular, and still continues to draw such major crowds, why not add a tournament or season play mode? It would be a smart move for Blizzard, as it would give more incentive to keep playing the game, with gradual rewards given out for league standings, winning so many matches in a row, and so on and so forth.

Overwatch definitely has eSports potential, and Blizzard may eventually be presented with an opportunity to bring an eSports-type mode to consoles. Creating your own tournaments with an engaging community can also extend the life of the game as newer shooters come out.

Are there any modes missing you’d love to see added into the game? Any of the above listed modes you disagree with? Sound off in the comments below!
