This year is the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, and SEGA has been teasing something major for the past few months. A Sonic panel at SXSW revealed a release date for an upcoming game and a fan event that will have some more information.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 25th anniversary panel at SXSW featured members from Sonic Team including social media manager Aaron Webber and former lead programmer Yuji Naka. Roger Craig Smith and Mike Pollock, the voices of Sonic and Dr. Eggman, also showed up.

No new games were announced during the panel, but a release date was confirmed for one title. Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice will come to 3DS on Sept. 27 after being delayed for a year. The game was originally meant to release last fall, but was delayed by SEGA for quality reasons. Both versions of Sonic Boom were plagued with bugs and glitches, so Fire and Ice was given more development time to avoid that situation.

Fans looking for news on a new Sonic game should pay close attention to the 25th Anniversary Party, which will be held in San Diego on July 22. The party will take place at the House of Blues, with bands Crush 40 and Hyper Potions scheduled to perform.

Tickets are on sale now, with about 1,000 available. The description of this event says fans will get an “exclusive first look at the future of Sonic”.  There’s still plenty of time left to reveal a special 25th anniversary game. Or it could be a trailer for the live-action Sonic film that’s happening.

What do you think will be revealed at the 25th Anniversary Party? Let us know in the comments.
