Xbox One owners hit backwards compatible oil this weekend, as users discovered they were able to download and play Xbox 360 hit Red Dead Redemption, as well as other games, including Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and Halo Wars. Microsoft’s Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, has since apologized for the slip and explained why the games have been removed.
“Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles,” he posted on Reddit. “Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available. We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We will have more information on upcoming releases soon.”
Hyrb went on to say that Microsoft hopes to bring as many Xbox 360 titles to the Xbox One’s growing backwards compatibility library as possible, and confirmed that players who accessed the accidentally available games will not be banned.
