‘Splosion Man – Not A Portal Reference
In the science-based Xbox Arcade game ‘Splosion Man, an achievement is accomplished if you collect all 47 cakes in single player mode and will gain you 25G. Despite it saying it’s not a reference to Valve’s puzzle series, Portal, it is addressing the famous quote from the game, ‘the cake is a lie’.
Borderlands – My Brother Is An Italian Plumber
In a nod to everyone’s favorite Nintendo handyman, killing an enemy by jumping on their head will gain you 15G or a bronze trophy in the original Borderlands on Xbox or PlayStation. The move references Mario’s classic attack of jumping on enemies throughout his franchise.
The Simpsons Game – Pwnd
An achievement for being generally very bad at the game, this one awards you nothing other than the shame of having it in your collection. Consistently dying is how to get hold of it and whether that’s by falling in lava, being shot at or simply getting a good old punch – you can literally feel the game mocking you.
Portal 2 – Pit Boss
Full of dry humor and dark themes, Portal 2 is well known for it’s slightly weird characters, gameplay and achievements. One of the most entertaining is Pit Boss and will earn you 30G or a bronze trophy. It occurs towards the end of the game, where you are running away from Aperture Science and the clutches of then-villain, Wheatley. He will ask you to jump into a pit of apparent death by giving a long speech as to what lies there, such as your parents and some hunky men. If you do as he says and jump in, despite the gruesome death, you will unlock the Pit Boss achievement.
South Park: The Stick of Truth – Face Hoff
Only in a game based on the world of South Park would you find an achievement called Face Hoff. To gain this title as well as the 15G that comes with it, you must defeat Princess Kenny while looking like David Hasselhoff. The best part is that this is a secret achievement, so you have to have the instinct to copy the TV personality’s image naturally.
Magicka – It’s Over 9000!!!
Magicka is a PC game from 2011 based on Norse mythology and contains a huge amount of humor. Almost every achievement is amusing and it was hard to choose from them all. But this tribute to Dragon Ball Z’s famous chant definitely made us chuckle. To get it, you have to deal out over 9000 damage to one enemy and you need to be ready to unleash your power. But if you do achieve it, be sure to tell the world that it’s over 9000!
Call of Juarez: The Cartel – Ladder Goat
This third sequel to the Western shooter series hid a special achievement to those who were into their viral videos. Ladder Goat is a world famous video from YouTube channel Dopelives, which shows a gamer laughing hysterically to a goat floating up a ladder in a playthrough of Bound in Blood. In a tribute to the popular clip, The Cartel will reward you with 10G if you manage to uncover the hidden DVD of the Ladder Goat Movie. Click here to view the original video!
Dirt 2 – 2 Cups, 1 Girl
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll probably have heard about the legendary online filth that is ‘2 Girls 1 Cup’. We don’t particularly want to go into the disturbing detail of what it’s about if you don’t already know, but if you win two team events (or cups) with the same female companion, then this achievement that pays homage to the cult video is yours and will reward you with 10G.
Fallout 4 – Touchdown!
A massive game with much to discover, gamers are discovering new things about Fallout 4 every day. But one of the more entertaining discoveries was that of the Touchdown achievement – being killed by a Super Mutant Suicider or a Fat Man. It suggests a link to the game of football and whilst being quite humorous, it’s perhaps one of the more embarrassing trophies to hold.
Gears of War – Seriously…
This is a perfect example of going so far that even the game is mocking you. To unlock this 50G achievement, you need to kill 10,000 people in ranked multiplayer matches. Yeah. So if you’ve spent enough time, effort and personal development to be able to achieve this one, there’s no wonder the game is questioning you.
