Who paid $700,000 for that fancy helmet?

Halo 5’s microtransactions appear to show no signs of slowing down as the total amount of sales has reached over $700,000. That’s up from the previously released figure of $500,000 just earlier this month. Considering that Halo 5 has been out for less than a month, it seems these microtransactions are proving rather popular.

The news has been announced by Microsoft on the Halo Waypoint site. These funds will be used to go towards the Halo World Championship prize pool which now stands at a whopping $1.7 million. The amount of money actually raised from Halo 5’s microtransactions is probably even higher given that only a “portion” of the money from microtransactions goes towards the Halo World Championships. The exact amount kept by Microsoft has not been specified.

Despite the obvious success of Halo 5’s microtransactions, such a feature is still a very controversial topic amongst gamers and many feel that microtransactions have no place in triple A games.

To celebrate the Halo World Championships, Microsoft has announced new Halo Championship Series Athlon Armor and Weapon skins which will be available via Legendary Req packs that will only be available “for a very limited time” once the Halo World Championships begin. The Req pack will include the following:

  • HCS Athlon Helmet
  • HCS Athlon Armor
  • HCS Assault Rifle skin
  • HCS Magnum Skin
  • HCS Emblem

The Halo World Championship will be held on Xbox Live from December 6 and will eventually turn into in-person events. To find out how to enter, when all the dates are, and what the rules are, head over to the official website.

Upon its release on October 27, Halo 5: Guardians has done extremely well both commercially and critically, especially considering it is only available on the Xbox One and has been out for less than a month. The game is getting a free expansion pack, called Battle of Shadow and Light, this week.
